SNAC

We call ourselves SNAC

... which, of course, stands for Sunday Night at Church

We are the youth group at First United Church Mount Pearl.  We meet once each week (Sunday nights, 7pm-9pm) between September to June.  There are usually around 13 - 18 of us in our youth group ... from grade seven (12-13 years) to grade twelve (17-18 years). If you fit that age range, why not consider joining our group. You don't have to be a member of First United to participate.  All are welcome.

We have barrels of fun with things such as games, BBQs, movie nights, bowling, hiking, and sports. We also participate and lead in Worship and Outreach supporting our faith community, our local community and our world. Some of our activities include:

  • leading two church services: the Vesper Service at Christmas and Palm Sunday (with the Sunday School)
  • twice yearly, participating in Faith Talks
  • preparing about 200 Christmas loot bags for prison inmates
  • decorating the Church Hall for Christmas and for UCW functions
  • making Valentine Cards and cookies for the seniors in two seniors homes in Mt. Pearl; we deliver the cards and cookies to each individual resident at the homes
  • hosting the Pumpkin Carving Party and Trick or Trunk night at Halloween
  • participating in the Memorial Service on Remembrance Day (November 11th); one of us joins with a member of the Men's Club to lay a wreath
  • hosting the Easter Morning Breakfast at the Church
  • fundraising: leading the annual "We Can" fundraising program and the ongoing Recycling Program

Halloween Celebrations

We owe a BIG thank you to SNAC (our Youth Group at First) for hosting the annual Pumpkin Carving and Trunk or Treat Halloween Celebrations.  And, of course, we can't forget all of the people who came out to support the events.  From decorating Trinity Hall to their vehicles and for all those wonderful treats for the children.  EVERYBODY had a ball - the little ones and the big ones! Take a look at the photos and you'll see what we mean.

Pumpkin Carving

Trunk or Treat

After the Pumpkin Carving, the kids all headed outside for Trunk or Treat.  Lots of sugar that evening!

Another Ongoing Project

"Together We Can Make a Difference."

Together We CAN is an annual partnership project Together We Canfor SNAC and the Board of Management.  Recycled pop cans serve as piggy banks and are distributed to all members of our congregation in June each year.  Over the summer and as you are able, we ask that you save your loose change or slip a bill or two into the piggy bank for return to the church in the Fall.  The funds raised are used (60:40) toward the continuation and activities of our youth group and for general operations of our church.

Jenny Noel

After 6 years as a member of Youth Group (SNAC) and 6 years as a leader, Jenny Noel is now moving away. She has graduated from MUN with her Education Degree and will be teaching a Grade 5 class in England.

Congratulations on your achievements Jenny!

We are so excited for you and wish you the very best ... but we will miss you!

Jenny's "Leaving Party"

Leaving Party

May 26th - It was a fantastic evening so we headed outside for the annual clean up of church grounds.

SNAC stands for Sunday Night at Church!

It's the name of our Youth Group and just as the name implies, they meet at the church every Sunday night for fun and fellowship.  Throughout the year  they take part in some pretty fantastic projects - all with a good cause in  mind.  As well as having fun, they also give back - to their church family and to the community.

It has been their tradition at First United, to prepare and serve Easter Sunday Breakfast. It's a lot of work for all members of the group but, like everything they do, they manage to have a whole lot of fun as well. The funds they raise for this event go towards supporting some of their activities throughout the year.

A BIG Thank You to SNAC!

And to all of our church family who help support them .... Thank YOU!

Victor Heads Back to Brazil

Victor OliveiraLast Sunday we said "So Long" to Victor Oliveira, a Brazilian teenager and exchange student at Mount Pearl Senior High.

Victor moved to Mount Pearl in September 2018 and over the course of the next five months became an integral part of SNAC, our Youth Group.  Victor's Mom reached out by email to First United on Sunday, September 9th, letting us know of Victor's journey. On that day with the exception of his host family, he didn't know anybody in the community and was coming to our church for the very first time that morning.  Rev. Ian welcomed him with an invitation to participate in SNAC which was starting up again in a couple of weeks. And it started from there.

Victor told us that he played the drums and, with Peter's encouragement, became part of our music accompaniment, rarely missing a Sunday. And on Sunday night, you would find him back at church again - with SNAC. He took part in all their activities, helping with special projects and making new friends he will keep for a lifetime.

Safe travels back home Victor. We will miss you!

Update on What We've Been Doing

Well since we started up again in September we've been busy!  Every Sunday evening we get together to participate in fun activities and, of course, we take an active part in a number of Outreach Services in our church.  For instance, we host the Pumpkin Carving and Halloween Fun night. Then there's the 'We Can" Project.  Each year we are involved in Remembrance Day. At Christmas we help collect and deliver food to Bridges to Hope Food Centre and prepare Christmas loot bags for the prison.  On Easter Sunday morning, we host breakfast at the church. We also participate in some of our Worship services.

How We Ended Last Season

Our final get together before summer break.  It was June 2018 ...  SNAC, our Youth Group, report that they've been VERY busy these past few days.  Last weekend they attended the Conference in Carbouear, then this weekend they all got together for some fun before saying "So Long" for the summer -  a Scavenger Hunt,  sleepover at the church, and candy buffet, closing things out with breakfast at Cora's.  Take a look at our slideshow!

What We Did Last Sunday

It was great fun last Sunday night. First the clean-up of church grounds and then there was a game of Nerf Wars.

SNAC served breakfast on Easter Sunday morning!

Halloween 2017

We had so much fun and hope you did too!  On Sunday evening, October 29th, SNAC once again hosted our annual Pumpkin Carving AND Trick or Trunk Night at First United Church.  Take a look at our photo gallery.

A special thank you to all our congregational members who came out to participate and support. We could not have done it without you.

SNAC - Part of 2017 Youth Exchange Program

This year SNAC took part in a Youth Exchange!! We were twinned with a Youth Group from Ontario.

On July 17 to July 24th, 2017 we hosted 21 youth and their four leaders here in Mount Pearl.  The purpose was to get to know other youth from across the country who are part of the United Church of Canada and to showcase our culture and Province. The kids came from communities in Ontario.

From October 4th to the 10th, 2017 SNAC, along with our leaders, will travel to Ontario.

Our Photo Album

We have a gallery of photos for each day - starting at the left with Monday's arrival and getting to know each other.  Click on either of the photos to open the gallery for a particular day. Each day lead to something different, more adventures and a whole lot of fun.

And to add to our collection, the following are a few video clips.

AND on Friday it was about...

We ended the evening on Friday with a good old Newfoundland Time.  Music, Mummers and Kissin' the Cod!  All twenty-five of our visitors took part in the fun to become 'Honorary Newfoundlanders'.   They were in groups of five.  Now the first group were a little tentative - not sure what they'd landed themselves into and not sure what would happen next.  But by the end of that first kiss, they all got the hang of it and the rest couldn't wait for their turn.  Kissing the cod...hilarious!!  Ah the smell of fish that stays with you for a while.

Check out the Slideshow

Want to see what else we did on Friday?   Look through our photo album!

So, on Saturday it was off to the beach

From swimming, climbing the rocks, exploring the beach, to BBQ and then back to Mount Pearl.  Check out the photo album for Saturday.  Now, you'd think we would be totally tired at the end of the day, but we managed to squeeze in just a little more fun.

Thank You

We all worked hard to make our Youth Exchange 2017 program a success.  From fundraising, to planning, to execution, it took dedication, cooperation, collaboration and participation from each member of SNAC as well as our leaders, the Men's Club, UCW and our congregation.

To qualify we were required to raise $12,000 and WE DID IT!

BUT we didn't do it alone

A HUGE "Thank You and Shout Out" to our Church for their support.  Everybody pitched in to volunteer and make the summer camp so special.  Without you, we could not have pulled this off!

... The big week finally arrived as we greeted our friends from Ontario.  Talk about community coming together!  It was fabulous.   From start to finish it was a week of fun, team-building, and learning - an experience of a lifetime.

The first two days were spent getting to know each other, tackling a community clean-up project, fun at the beach, camp fire and so much more.
