100th ANNIVERSARY SERVICE – SPECIAL SERVICE ON SUNDAY, JUNE 8THWe will be having a special service here at First United to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada this year. Our special guests will include Shannon McCarthy, Regional Council Executive Minister for Prairie to Pine, Living Skies, and Northern Spirit, and Springwater Hester-Meawassige, Interim Executive Minister, Indigenous Ministries. Mark your calendar for this special Sunday service.

CONGREGATIONAL YEAR-END BBQ: Everyone is welcome to join us after worship on Sunday, June 15th in Trinity Hall to celebrate the past year here at First United Church. Hot dogs, hamburgers, dessert, tea and coffee and drinks will be served.  We are asking members of the congregation to donate salads for the BBQ.  Thank you.  Hope to see you all on the 15th

BOOK CLUB:  The Book Club meets once a month. The book for discussion for May month is Rock Paper Sex by Kerri Cull. Please note the meeting scheduled for May 28th has been rescheduled for June 4th.  For more information, please contact Pam Morgan at 709-691-0214 or pmorgan@mun.ca

QUILTING GROUP: The next meeting of the Quilting Group is scheduled for Monday, June 2nd at 7:30 pm. All levels are welcome to join. For more information contact Pam Morgan at 709-691-0214 or pmorgan@mun.ca

Our Youth Group collects beverage containers for recycling. If you would like to drop off your beverage recycling at the church, here’s what can be recycled: aluminum can; plastic containers; glass bottles; steel cans; drink boxes (tetra); mini sips (drink pouches) etc. (Please wash out all bottles and remove all caps before dropping them off.) The Youth Group thanks you for your support.

BUILDING FUND SUNDAY: The last Sunday of the month is designated as Building Fund Sunday. Envelopes are available on the table in foyer.  if you would like to make a contribution.  Thank you for your continued support. 

FOOD BANK SUNDAY: The first Sunday of the month is designated as Food Bank Sunday. Envelopes are available on the table in foyer.

100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION GIFTWARE: June 10th will mark the United Church’s 100th Anniversary. The United Church Bookstore, 320 Elizabeth Avenue is selling anniversary merchandise. T-shirts for $34.95 and anniversary mugs at $21.95.  If you are interested in purchasing either of these, please call Leona at 709-3999-0834 or email at llaundry@united-church.ca  Pics are posted in foyer.

June 10th, 2025, the United Church of Canada is 100 year old. First Dawn Eastern Edge Regional Council is asking our churches to ring those church bells 100 times to celebrate this monumental event. We are asking that you ring them between 6:30 and 7:00pm on June 10th. Here at First we will be ringing our hand bells at 6:30, if you would like to participate please show up at 6:20

Flipper Dinner: Jimmy Pratt Outreach Center will be holding a Flipper Dinner on Wednesday June 11, 2025. Take outs at 4:30pm and eat in at 5:30pm. Tickets are $30.00. See the poster on the bulletin board for more information

SUMMER YOUTH POSITION – FIRST DAWN EASTERN EDGE REGIONAL COUNCIL OFFICE: Duties are working in the Office, Bookstore and Archives. Position is for an eight –week duration for months of July and August. For more information, please see notice on bulletin board in foyer.

The United Church of Canada celebrates Centennial with special Newfoundland worship service. A worship service in the historic Gower Street United Church in St. John’s, NL, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of The United Church of Canada, which was formed by an Act of Parliament on June 10, 1925.

The service at Gower Street UC honours Newfoundland’s integral role in the history of The United Church of Canada – both as the historic home of Methodism in Canada, and because Newfoundland joined the United Church more than two decades before it joined the confederation of Canada.

WHEN: June 8, 2025, 7 p.m.
WHERE: Gower Street United Church, 99 Queens Rd, St. John’s, NL.
WHAT: Centennial worship service

Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, will address the special in-person service, which will be livestreamed nationally on The United Church of Canada’s YouTube channel

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD COLD PLATE FUNDRAISER: Turkey and ham cold plates will be available for $20 until June 3rd. Pick-up is Saturday, June 7, 11:30 am at Church of the Ascension. Their office will also be taking cash orders or EMT cotgs@nf.aibn.com with initials CP and name. There are a limited number available. For more information, call the church office at 747-1022

Bridges to Hope:  The Annual General Meeting of Bridges to Hope will be held on June 12th, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at First United Church, 221 Park Avenue, Mt. Pearl.  Everyone is welcome to attend, to learn more about this important organization and outreach mission.  The meeting will be held in Trinity Hall, in the basement, accessed via the side door on Churchill Avenue.



ITEMS FOR BRIDGES TO HOPE: If you would like to pick up a few items to help out Bridges, please place donations in the bin in the foyer here at First United. The monthly item needed for June is cereal. Weekly “Flyer” Specials May 29 – June 4, 2025 – Items helpful for food hampers
