SUMMER STUDENT:  We have received a grant to hire a summer student again this year. This is an eight-week position for the months of July and August, 37 hours per week. 100th ANNIVERSARY SERVICE – SPECIAL SERVICE ON SUNDAY, JUNE 8THWe will be having a special service here at First United to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada this year. Our special guests will include Shannon McCarthy, Regional Council Executive Minister for Prairie to Pine, Living Skies, and Northern Spirit, and Springwater Hester-Meawassige, Interim Executive Minister, Indigenous Ministries. Mark your calendar for this special Sunday service.

Our Youth Group collects beverage containers for recycling. If you would like to drop off your beverage recycling at the church, here’s what can be recycled: aluminum can; plastic containers; glass bottles; steel cans; drink boxes (tetra); mini sips (drink pouches) etc. (Please wash out all bottles and remove all caps before dropping them off.) The Youth Group thanks you for your support.

BUILDING FUND SUNDAY: The last Sunday of the month is designated as Building Fund Sunday. Envelopes are available on the table in foyer.  if you would like to make a contribution.  Thank you for your continued support. 

FOOD BANK SUNDAY: The first Sunday of the month is designated as Food Bank Sunday. Envelopes are available on the table in foyer.

100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION GIFTWARE: June 10th will mark the United Church’s 100th Anniversary. The United Church Bookstore, 320 Elizabeth Avenue is selling anniversary merchandise. T-shirts for $34.95 and anniversary mugs at $21.95.  If you are interested in purchasing either of these, please call Leona at 709-3999-0834 or email at llaundry@united-church.ca  Pics are posted in foyer.

TOPSAIL UNITED CHURCH will be hosting an Afternoon Tea Party and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 24 from 2 until 4 pm, with special musical guests Avalonia.  Tickets $15 Adults, Children under 12 cost $7. Please remember your Fascinator.  To reserve your ticket please contact the church office at 709-834-4567. No tickets at the door.

PORTUGAL COVE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH SPRING CONCERT: Be sure to reserve Saturday, May 31st for a wonderful evening of musical variety as Portugal Cove Memorial United Church presents “It’s Spring! Let’s Sing!” This evening of music will include many genres of music including classical, spiritual, country, folk and more. It will feature entertainers from our local area as well as from around Newfoundland and the Ukraine. The concert begins at 7:00pm on May 31st. Tickets may be purchased beforehand from church members or by calling their church office. Tickets may also be bought on the door. Tickets cost $10 each (this also includes a lunch during the intermission).

SUMMER YOUTH POSITION – FIRST DAWN EASTERN EDGE REGIONAL COUNCIL OFFICE: Duties are working in the Office, Bookstore and Archives. Position is for an eight –week duration for months of July and August. For more information, please see notice on bulletin board in foyer. 

THE ST. JOHN’S AND AREA COUNCIL OF CHURCHES will be holding its Annual General Meeting and Dinner on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at 6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s (the Kirk) Church Hall. The guest speaker will be Colonel Ray Rowe of the Salvation Army and musical entertainment will be provided by Noreen Fraize Greene. Come and enjoy a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings followed by a delicious dessert! For tickets ($20.00 each), please contact Rev. Kathy at 709-771-9779.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD COLD PLATE FUNDRAISER: Turkey and ham cold plates will be available for $20 until June 3rd. Pick-up is Saturday, June 7, 11:30 am at Church of the Ascension. Their office will also be taking cash orders or EMT cotgs@nf.aibn.com with initials CP and name. There are a limited number available. For more information, call the church office at 747-1022

GOWER CENTENNIAL BANQUET: On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Gower United is having an evening of delicious food, community and reflection to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. The evening will include a meal prepared by Spirit of Newfoundland, a presentation from Rob Pitt of the Gower Heritage and Archives Committee and dinner music by harpist Venessa Goodyear. Tickets are $35.00 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are now on sale from the Gower Office by phone at (709-753-7286 ext. 200) or by email. Payment is due upon purchase via cheque, e-transfer, or cash.  The deadline to purchase tickets is May 22nd. They gratefully acknowledge the generous support from The Centennial Granting Fund at The United Church of Canada Foundation, which helped bring this celebration to life.

GOWER STREET UNITED CHURCH: Downtown Pop’s Concert: Our Centennial celebrations continue with a Gower Community Band Downtown Pops Concert with Stella’s Circle Inclusion Choir on Sunday, May 25th at 3 pm. This concert is free to attend and open to all ages. They gratefully acknowledge the generous support from The Centennial Granting Fund at The United Church of Canada Foundation, which helped bring this celebration to life.



ITEMS FOR BRIDGES TO HOPE: If you would like to pick up a few items to help out Bridges, please place donations in the bin in the foyer here at First United. The monthly item needed for April is Kraft Dinner. Some weekly specials for the week of May 15th to 21st helpful for food hampers:

Bridges to Hope April statistics: In April, Bridges distributed 683 hampers reaching a total of 1417 individuals, supporting 125 seniors, providing food assistance to 442 children, with an 11% increase from the previous month. Sustaining this level of demand would not be possible without our supporters like you.
